\ South Asian Alliance of Grassroot
NGOs
In 2004, Butterflies facilitated a South Asian Alliance of Grassroot NGO’s
for Protection of Child Rights. Expanding the partnership from three to five
countries over the past two years, the effort has been targeted towards
bringing together partner NGO’s from South Asian Countries namely,
Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Pakistan, Nepal, India and Sri Lanka with a
commitment to advocate, promote and ensure action on the ground for the
protection of the Rights of Children in especially difficult circumstances
in the region.
 Sharing of experiences is an essential condition for the knowledge society
of NGOs, to have a powerful solidarity, which is able to impact on major
policy decisions and political environment of any country or region for the
cause of human rights. Along with, it is important to create space for
children’s participation in the true sense in the functioning of NGOs, which
is facilitated by establishing a South Asian Region Children’s and
Adolescent’s alliance/network, based on the principle of democratic
participation, largely with a purpose to further learning and sharing of
experiences across the countries and also to avoid duplication of efforts.
The children’s participation approach focuses on the needs of the
children, allowing the children to define their own priorities and concerns,
come up with their own solutions and implement their own programmes. Two
major interventions within Butterflies programming, namely the Children’s
Development Bank and the Child Journalist Forum are being implemented as
part of this initiative. These interventions have been scaled up in 5 cities
of India as well as of South Asia.
