\ Workshop and Consultations

As part of Butterflies objective to work in partnership with grassroots voluntary organizations and the international agencies to raise awareness on issues which affect marginalized children everywhere, Butterflies on a regular basis organizes and actively participates in workshops of diverse issues. This enables Butterflies to reach out to larger audience, share common concerns and come out with collective solution. Some of the important activities in this regard are as follows:

5th March 2007
On 5th March 2007, Butterflies organized a meeting with 5 NGOs- CASP Plan, Prabhatara, Vidya, Project Concern India and Sahitya School who with Butterflies are part of the National Institute of Open Schooling (NIOS). Butterflies is accredited to the NIOS programme and the five NGOs are the linked partner organizations accessing NIOS for their children through Butterflies. The meeting was organized with the objective to formalize and systematize the relationship of Butterflies with the NIOS partner NGOs and to understand the status of NIOS in each organization. Further, it aimed to clarify roles and responsibilities of Butterflies and the partner NGOs in the context of NIOS and also to understand issues related to NIOS for each of the partner NGO and identify areas of support for them to develop timelines for implementing NIOS programme for the current year with clearly chalked out roles and responsibilities.

27th -28th December 2006
A two-day workshop for DCRC members was organized at Indian Social Institute on Journalism and Print Media on 27th and 28th December 2006 wherein 40 children and adult facilitators participated. The workshop was very successful in training children in various skills involved in newspaper publication, formation and administration of child journalists’ groups, reporting, editing and writing. Children also designed a newspaper, Delhi Children’s Times which DCRC children will release in the month of February. On the last day Shri Brijmohan Gupta, Station Director, Prasaar Bharti-Broadcasting Corporation of India, graced the occasion and distributed Certificates of Participation, to all the participants in the training workshop.


21st - 22nd December 2006
A two-day residential national level training workshop of Child Health Educators, one of the major component of Butterflies Health Care programme, was organized on 21st and 22nd December 2006 at Jamia Hamdard with the objective of promoting the concept of health care at national level and also to inculcate a sense of collective participation and responsibility among children towards their health. 28 participants from 9 grassroot voluntary organizations across India actively participated in this workshop.

29th -30th November 2006
Getting it Right” – A two-day workshop on People Policies, Office Administration and Accounting in voluntary organizations was organized jointly by Butterflies and Cocoon, Bangalore at the India Habitat Centre on the 29th and 30th November 2006 with the objective to put management systems in place and use funds judiciously.

Butterflies organized 4 Island level workshops in Andaman and Nicobar Islands (South Andaman, Little Andaman, Great Nicobar and Car Nicobar) on child rights for youth to create awareness amongst them about child rights, motivate them to identify and address issues and problems related with children and also familiarize them to their roles as duty bearers in ensuring child protection. Around 100 youths from different villages (tribal/non tribal) participated in these workshops.

30th September 2006
The fourth Annual Lecture series was organized on the theme of ‘Judiciary and Children’. Justice Bhaskar Rao, Member National Human Rights Commission graced the occasion as the chief guest and delivered the Keynote Address. Mr. Gerry Pinto, advisor Butterflies chaired the session. The panelists comprised of Dr. Achal Bhagat, Director Saarthak, who shared his views on Child Friendly Judicial Processes; Ms. Aparna Bhatt, Advocate Legal Services, spoke on the Laws for Children and Mr. Gautam Navlakha, Editorial Consultant EPW & Human Rights Activist spoke on duality of judicial pronouncements and their impact on children.

28th August 2006
From Banning to Moving Ahead’- a one-day consultation on the issue of Child Labour was organized by Butterflies and Human Rights Law Network on 28th August 2006 at India International Centre, with reference to the notification on ‘prohibiting employment of children as domestic servants or servants or in dhabas (roadside eateries), restaurants, hotels, motels, teashops, resorts, spas or in other recreational centers’. The Consultation focused on mainly two questions, the plan for the rehabilitation of children affected by the ban and what should be the prescribed guidelines and standards for rescue, restoration and rehabilitation that need to be followed on or soon after October 10 when suddenly lakhs of children will find themselves out of the jobs, when the central government notification comes into full effect. The immediate goal of the consultation was formulation of a doable Delhi State Plan of Action to deal with the situation of child labour and develop a protocol for rescue, restoration and rehabilitation of affected children. The Plan of Action (Report) was presented to Chief Minister of Delhi, Ms. Sheila Dikshit, the Labour Department, Government of NCT Delhi and other concerned departments/voluntary organizations for consensus building, to ensure that child rights are protected in the wake of ban on children in domestic work, dhabas and eateries.

June -July 2006
Butterflies and Prayas, the two child protection NGOs, took the initiative of planning and organizing five Regional Consultations, six State Consultations, one National Consultation and two Children’s Consultations, involving 287 voluntary organizations nationwide and 146 children to facilitate inputs in the 11th five Year Plan. It was indeed historic that for the first time, 287 field-based organizations (350 participants) working on child protection issues came together to be part of the planning process and they shared not only their concerns but also came up with concrete recommendations and proposals to input into the Eleventh Five-Year Plan.



23rd June 2006
On 23rd June 2006, a meeting with corporate houses was organized with the intention to sensitize the corporates towards the cause of street and working children and orient them towards two innovative projects of Butterflies geared to empower street and working children- Children’s Development Bank and Children’s Newspaper. This meeting also enabled the sharing of some unique efforts of corporate bodies like American Pacific to support the children associated with Butterflies. Wide array of corporate houses participated in the meeting that comprised of world’s largest car manufacturing company- General Motors to ITC Welcome Group that constitutes the topmost rung of India's hospitality business. Representative from Confederation of Indian Industries, India’s premier business association playing a proactive role in India’s development process was also part of the meeting. With respect to print media, spokesperson from Times of India, the leading daily newspaper of India was present while representatives from well renowned corporate house like British Gas, Shell India and HSBC also participated and appreciated both the initiatives of Butterflies.

22nd – 24th March 2006
Butterflies organize a one-day adult (NGOs) consultation and two days children consultation on “Draft Bill on Offences against Children, 2005” at Indian Social Institute, New Delhi. All the participants felt that the consultation was a good opportunity for all to give their views since in most cases children’s legislations are rushed through without any debate, discussions or deliberations. The general consensus being that children and adults / organizations working with children should have a say in such a legislation that is seeking to protect the rights of children.

20th -24th February 2006
Butterflies along with Equal Access organize a 5 day Children’s Radio Production Workshop with the objective to share their experiences, ideas and creativity through the production of their own radio programs as well as inculcate in them programme making skills. It also emphasized on imparting basic editing skills and technical assistance to design and set up a participatory radio initiative that addresses the rights of children and create opportunities for the betterment of their lives.

28th February 2006
Children’s meet was organized by Childline India Foundation at Delhi Brotherhood Society’s Premises in New Delhi where 21 children associated with Butterflies participated. Butterflies also facilitated a session with 150 children in order to enable them to come up with issues and concerns and moderated an interface of the children and allied systems including Chairperson of the Child Welfare Committee, Metropolitan Magistrate of the Juvenile Justice Board and Directors of the Childline organizations.

Follow up Training workshop on Journalism and Print Media and Children’s Development Bank for 50 children and 8 adult facilitators associated with Aparajeyo Bangladesh was organized at Dhaka.

16th December 2005
About 20 Railway Protection Force (RPF) personnel were given an orientation on “Child Rights” at New Delhi Railway Station.

6th December 2005
Open House discussion on Childline (helpline for children in distress) was organized at Nizamuddin Dargah . During the discussion children came up with issues/concerns and possible solutions of the problems that they face in their day to day life.

3rd December 2005
First Regional Convention of South Asian Child Journalist Forum was organized by Butterflies at Chennai. The convention was presided over by Justice M Karpaga Vinayagam, Judge Madras High Court, Prof. S.P. Thyagarajan, Vice Chancellor, Madras University, Mr Kamalendra Kanwar, Editor, New Indian Express and Ms. Helga Klein, Chief of Party, SARIQ. Chief Guest, Justice Karpaga Vinayagam, released the third issue of South Asian Children’s Times during the convention.

1st -2nd December 2005
South Asian Regional Follow up Training Workshop for 60 participants, 39children and 21 adult facilitators on Children’s Development bank and Journalism and Print Media at St. Thomas International Centre, Chennai. The follow up to the first South Asian Regional Training Workshop was based on this very experience of the participants in implementing the CDB and Newspaper project, with an objective to share the experiences of all partners with each other, reflect on the progress made and learn lessons from each other.

29th -30th November 2005
Regional planning workshop on Radio was organized with 24 children and 6 adults from 4 South Asian countries – Afghanistan, India, Nepal and Sri Lanka and was organized in Chennai. The planning meeting was organized to understand what radio is, what we can do with radio and the participants were also briefed about the forthcoming radio initiative. Preliminary training was also provided to the participants on the likely issues that would be addressed during the next round of training workshops.

16th November 2005
Butterflies organized one day consultation on “Children living in Poverty” at Jamia Hamdard, New Delhi. This was followed by the launch of the report” Poverty and Children in Orissa- Strengthening Government Accountability”.

Butterflies Third Annual Lecture Series- First call for Children on the topic “Children and Disaster” was held at India International Centre, New Delhi.

Butterflies organized a Consultation on Challenges in Working with Adolescent Street and Working Children at Indian Social Institute, New Delhi.

Butterflies organized a one day health workshop with children at Gandhi Peace Foundation, New Delhi.

21st June – 24th June 2005
On the occasion of International Day on Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, with Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, Butterflies organized a two day event in Nizamuddin Dargah and Okhla to highlight issues related to substance use. About 300 children and adults participated in the event.

20th April -10th April 2005
Butterflies organized First South Asian Regional Training Workshop on Journalism and Print Media and Children’s Development Bank at Vishwa Yuvak Kendra, Chanakya Puri, New Delhi 72 participants, 50children and 22 adults from six countries of South Asia- Afghanistan, Bangladesh, India, Nepal, Pakistan and Sri Lanka, attended the workshop.

12th -16th April 2005
A five day workshop was organized for the field team of Andaman and Nicobar Islands on Child Rights, Child Protection.
